Here's why:

Stephanie is frequently asked why she does what she does; after all, domestic violence is not the easiest issue to tackle. So here it is; in her own words.

First of all, I was raised around it. My dad was a brilliant man, but one of the most emotionally abusive people I've ever known. My parents divorced when I was a young, and my mother had a live-in boyfriend who was physically abusive, mostly to her. He lived with us until I was 16. I know what it's like for a kid to live with that. I married a guy who had his moments as well. A couple memorable ones are of me bouncing off the wall he threw me into and another of blood pouring from my nose after he slammed my face with his elbow.

In the professional arena I'd had incidences with employees who were victims of abuse. In the early days of my career we never spoke of it, never helped the employee and had absolutely no resources to turn to. If they existed we didn't know what they were.

So years after I left internal human resource work to start my own consulting business, I had built relationships with several members of law enforcement. During coffee one morning, one of these people said, "Knowing your personal background and your professional background, I don't understand why you're not working in DV?" I realized that I'd put my past behind me and moved on with my life. I still felt passionately about the issue and ending abuse in all its forms.

An idea was born. Why not combine my personal background with my professional expertise in human resources and management? I determined to take the issue of domestic violence to the corporate environment in a way no one was doing; and specialize in a way no one was doing. I wanted to guarantee my work, guarantee that it would change the corporate culture and ensure each client that I would continuously monitor our progress with ongoing financial analysis. In 2004 this was unheard of and a difficult pursuit. I spent months on primary and secondary research. I read, and continue to read, books, articles, research and journals. I speak to law enforcement, victims, offenders, security specialists, DV organizations, attorneys, therapists, doctors and business owners. Programs and offerings are continuously evolving. Despite my personal history I have a strong emphasis on offender issues. I believe that if you help offenders you help victims.

My clients see me as a trusted advisor; someone they can call for advice, consult in advance, and whose recommendations are taken seriously. The work that I do is not for the faint of heart, or for those that are looking for the "flavor of the month" training, its for forward-thinking, proactive organizations.
